EVE Valkyrie is introducing cross-platform VR play

The announcement was made in the opening ceremony at EVE Fanfest 2016 in Reykjavik, Iceland by Owen O’Brien, executive producer on Valkyrie at developer CCP’s Newcastle studio.
EVE Valkyrie is available now on Oculus Rift, and will be a launch title on PlayStation VR when it debuts in October. CCP has also announced the game will be coming to HTC Vive. The game sees five-on-five teams of fighter jets blasting each out of the depths of space, and it’s pretty fun.
The existing Oculus Rift version of the game has already attracted a strong following among early VR adopters. O’Brien revealed some impressive stats – players have collectively destroyed over 200,000 shops, engaged in more than 8000 battles, and the top three (perhaps slightly obsessive) players alone have 1000 matches between them. Not bad for a game that launched on 28 March.
Also announced was a new game mode coming to the team based shooter, Carrier Assault. This asymmetric combat mode will see a team of fighter ships working together to take down a colossal frigate. Weapons need to be disabled, shields taken down, and defences compromised, eventually allowing ships to barrel through trench runs and into the carrier’s interior to destroy its reactor.
The update will also bring several other new features to the game, including a new map and the option to configure a joystick for use in VR – perfect for a flight game. These, along with Carrier Assault, will arrive with EVE Valkyrie’ssummer update. Further improvements are planned, including better squad building options and a better progression system.
Cross-platform play is currently undated but likely to be implemented around the launch of PlayStation VR, when consumers will be able to get their hands on all three platforms.
