Nintendo’s ‘Mario Tennis Aces’ combines charm with surprising depth

Brilliant review from James over at Engadget. Follow the link for the full lowdown.

When I first saw the trailer for Mario Tennis Aces, I thought it looked like the perfect kind of game to throw on the TV when a bunch of friends visit. Over the years, Nintendo has spoiled us in that regard, with Mario Party, Wii Sports, Smash Bros., Mario Kart and others taking the top spots in my go-to party-game library. Naturally, then, I was excited to play the Mario Tennis Aces multiplayer demo this past weekend, but I came away feeling the game is a little more serious than I had anticipated.

After running through the tutorial, [...]

Starcraft: It’s 20 years old, still amazing and now Free.

In what I think is a very clever game, nearly two decades after its 1998 release, StarCraft is now free. Legally! Go download it now.

Why free? and Why a clever move? Well, Blizzard are soon to do a new release, a brighter, shinier re-mastered version. So they are using the original as a lead magnet, so to capture new people to the game, and re-ignite the passions of older fans –> then hit them with an ‘upgrade’ offer. Brilliant marketing. Blizzard has just [...]

Mario is coming to Minecraft (but only on Wii U)

The Wii U edition of Minecraft is getting an exclusive DLC pack that might make players on other formats a tad jealous – an official Super Mario Mash-Up Pack.

Nintendo says the DLC will give “immediate access to new skins, a Super Mario-themed pre-made world, and a set of Super Mario-themed music and item textures, all inspired by games in the iconic Super Mario series such as Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine”.

The asset drop will allow players to recreate locations from across the Mushroom Kingdom for themselves, all in Minecraft’s uniquely blocky aesthetic. Nintendo’s debut trailer shows [...]

Nintendo and Vans team up on retro gaming sneakers

By James Trew

Don’t expect a pair of Mario All Stars though.

A Nintendo-themed line of Vans sneakers has mysteriously popped up online. A European store listed the range that includes classic gaming icons like Zelda, Mario and Duck Hunt, adorning some of Vans’ most popular styles (like the Old Skool). Not much else is known about the collaboration, and the listing seems to have been removed (though a cache of it can befound here). The only other info being the collection will likely go on sale in June, priced at around €65 ($75). This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Nintendo sneakers, but it’s the first time we’ve seen them done in a way [...]
